Tanzatoto was founded in April 2002 with a view to improving the living conditions of deaf children in Tanzania. The founding initiative was taken by Monique Bekker, a remedial educationalist. Ms Bekker has worked in Tanzania since 1989 supporting deaf children.

In the course of time she has found that a new approach was required because with facilities as they were then, fewer than 5% of the target group was reached. Tanzatoto caters for deaf children’s families more than 95% of whom are not given any help whatsoever. Tanzatoto aims at providing parents with the means to give their children a dignified life. Tanzatoto teaches parents how to communicate with their children and to stand up for their children’s rights. The actual activities started in Tanzania in May 2003.
